Programmable devices typically refer to chips containing configurable logic circuits.  These include Field Programmable Logic Devices (FPGAs), Complex Programmable Logic Devices (CPLD), and Programmable Logic Devices (PLD, PLA, PAL, GAL). 

Programmable device components are electronic components whose function is not limited to a particular function.  It can be programmed at various points in the life cycle.  The programmable device is programmed at the earliest by the semiconductor supplier (standard cell, gate array), by the designer prior to assembly, or by the user in the circuit.

Programmable logic devices are ICs with a large number of ports and digital electronic circuitry that can be configured with basic software to perform a specific function or to perform a complex circuit.  In contrast to logic ports, which have a fixed function, a PLD has an undefined function at the time of manufacture.  Before the PLD can be used in a circuit, it must be programmed, i.e. reconfigured.

Programmable Device Applications

Programmable devices are used in many different industries.  A field-programmable gate array (FPGA) is an integrated circuit consisting of programmable logic components.  These logical components can be programmed as logical functions such as AND, XOR, and so on.  These functions can be e.g. decoders or simple mathematical functions.  In the majority of FPGAs, you can also find logical elements in the logical blocks.

For the implementation of designs of digital circuits to be included in the FPGA, a CAD program is used.  These CAD programs support different methods to add logical circuits.  Since these digital circuits are becoming increasingly complex, hardware description languages (HDLs) are the only practical choice to define such systems.  An HDL is a higher programming language.  The lower level is usually provided by CAD.  This allows the designer to fully focus on the functional aspects of the design with the HDL.
